The basic objectives are:
- To assimilate the fundamentals and basic knowledge of the history of Applied and Industrial arts.
- Know and understand the characteristics of Applied and Industrial arts.
- Understanding the different formal 鈥嬧媋nd visual languages, and get to know the different artistic techniques that are an inherent part of the Applied arts and of the Industrial phenomenon.

Una introducci贸n al estudio de la cultura material: la vida de los objetos.
Tema 1. El mundo antiguo. 1.1. Exvotos: los grandes santuarios de la Antig眉edad como lugares de intercambio cultural. 1.2. Homero y la memoria del pasado mic茅nico. 1.3. Los grandes templos griegos en la descripci贸n de Pausanias. 1.4. Espacio y g茅nero: interiores dom茅sticos y mobiliario. 1.5. Miradas a la vida en la Atenas cl谩sica en la cer谩mica de figuras negras y rojas. 1.6. Riquezas de Persia y Egipto: las cortes cosmopolitas del mundo helen铆stico. 1.7. Del Lacio agreste al luxo de una metr贸polis: cambios en la domus romana durante la 茅poca republicana. 1.8. El otium patricio y la vida cotidiana: aprendendo de las ruinas de Pompeya y Herculano. 1.9. Excesos imperiales: la Domus Aurea de Ner贸n. 1.10. M谩rmol: la presencia de Roma. 1.11. Los colores de Plinio: una peque帽a historia de la pintura romana.
Tema 2. La Edad Media. 2.1. Ruinas: Spolia y reutilizaci贸n. 2.2. Aut贸matas y prodigios en los espacios palatinos bizantinos. 2.3. El interior de los templos en Bizancio e en el Occidente europeo: mobiliario lit煤rgico e ornamenta sacra. 2.4. Comercio y diplomacia: la circulaci贸n de objetos de lujo, de Asia Central a la Europa atl谩ntica. 2.5. Los caminos del marfil en la econom铆a global medieval. 2.6. Los tejidos preciosos e sus significados en la escenograf铆a del poder. 2.7. Ceremoniales de coronaci贸n regios: escenarios e objetos en Reims, Burgos y Palermo. 2.8. El arte del tapiz, del bordado de Bayeux al conjunto da Dama e o Unicornio. 2.9. Hibridizaci贸n cultural en las cortes ib茅ricas: repensando la decoraci贸n mud茅jar. 2.10. Los interiores de las casas burguesas a trav茅s de la pintura flamenca.
Tema 3. 脡poca Moderna. 3.1. Renacimiento. Italia. Nuevas pautas y refinamientos en la decoraci贸n de interiores de los palazzi. Mobiliario art铆stico: los cassoni. Siglo XVI. Divisi贸n entre bellas artes y artes decorativas. Ciudades del lujo: Roma y Venecia. Espa帽a y el mobiliario del Siglo de Oro. 3.2. Barroco en Francia. Louis XIV: un estilo propio y producciones nacionales en las artes y decoraci贸n de interiores. Mobiliario barroco y coleccionismo: los cabinets. Importaci贸n de objetos orientales. Muebles lacados. La domesticidad burguesa. Holanda en el siglo XVII. 3.3. Siglo XVIII en Francia. Louis XV: la Corte en Par铆s y la evoluci贸n hacia el Rococ贸. Mobiliario rococ贸: feminidad y nuevo ideal de confort. Vendedores especializados y mercado capitalista para los objetos art铆sticos. Imperios de porcelana. Primeras imitaciones a los productos de lujo. Cr铆ticas a las chinoiseries.
Tema 4. 脡poca Contempor谩nea. 4.1. Del Neoclasicismo al estilo Imperio. 4.2. Historicismos y eclecticismo en la 茅poca victoriana. Las mujeres como consumidoras de artes decorativas. 4.3. Ideario y producciones del movimiento Arts and Crafts. Las exposiciones universales y los primeros museos de artes decorativas. El japonismo. 4.4. Art Nouveau: la aspiraci贸n al control est茅tico total y sus cr铆ticos. Modernismos franco-belga, geom茅trico de Mackintosh y Secession austr铆aca. 4.5. Primera mitad del siglo XX. La renovaci贸n de las vanguardias. El dise帽o industrial en la Bauhaus. Movimiento Moderno. 4.6. Estilizaciones y lujo: el Art D茅co. Organicismos. 4.7. Segunda mitad del siglo XX. Neovanguardias. El modelo italiano de colaboraci贸n con los fabricantes. Dise帽o escandinavo. Dise帽os futuristas y Pop. 4.8. Dise帽o posmoderno. 脷ltimos a帽os: globalizaci贸n, dise帽os performativos e identidades.

Students will be able to:
- Analyze and interpret critically the specific issues and historiographical assessment of the applied arts.
- Perform a technical and formal analysis of works of applied art in a comprehensive manner.
- Get a diachronic view of the evolution of applied arts in relation to the main styles and artwork of each period.
- Analyze and interpret works of applied art in its historical, cultural, social, economic, ideological or religious value, form, function or meaning.
- Analyze, organize and interpret information from different literature sources and other sources of information on these artistic matters .
- Analyze and synthesize the acquired knowledge .
- To master the technical vocabulary of the subject
- Apply knowledge rigorously through new technologies.
- Lectures on the theoretical concepts.
- Interactive classes in which the activities will be practical and related to th theoretical content of the material. Practical classes will include a field trip to a museum and / or exhibitions.
-Personalized tutoring.
The assessment will consist of three parts: written test (examination), class participation
seminars and work practices and personal work, which will include a classroom presentation.
The written test will account for 40% of the final grade.
Practical classes, participation in seminars and completion of the work will account for 40% of the final grade.
Attendance at lectures and practices is mandatory and will account for 20% of the final grade. Failing to attend more than the 20% of the lectures and practices will result in the impossibility of being evaluated in the first opportunity in may-june.
The student that has not completed the Interactive Teaching should pass the Theoretical Exam and complete the whole Interactive Teaching Dossier.
Following the Instruction N潞 1/2017 of Secretar铆a Xeral, students who are exempt from attendance in certain situations will be evaluated with a specific final exam (100%). Exemption from attendance must be authorized in advance by the university.

Reading knowledge of other Modern Languages, apart from Spanish, is highly recomended.
